What is a Team Manager?

Well, the club is grateful and completely indebted to the team managers/coaches and the fantastic work they do for the club, the age groups they coach and your children. We ask a lot from our team managers/coaches and below is a list (not complete) of the tasks/jobs they have to do throughout the season.

If you do find yourself having problems with your team manager/coach then please bare in mind the incredible amount of work they do and that they are volunteers. It is always better to discuss matters with your manager/coach (preferably at the end of training/match) and that football is a game full of opinions and nearly everyone’s is different. The club is also available to discuss matters but we hope you would be able to resolve most matters with the manager/coach.

CONGRATULATIONS - You’re the new team manager!!!!

Here’s what we expect of you......

ANNUALLY

  • Support club fundraising events and promote them within your team
  • Attend presentation evening (and make a fantastic speech)
  • Assist with any club tournament/festival
  • Register all your players with the league. This task includes collecting 2 photos, a copy of the birth certificate, filling in 3 forms, and sending them in to the league registration secretary. (If you have 10+ players it’s a big task.)
  • Register all your players with the club and collect annual subs
  • Check state of training equipment and order more/replacements at AGM
  • Find a kit sponsor (nag parents, local companies, your boss etc. etc etc.)
  • Find a jacket sponsor (See above but add more vigour)
  • Find a supplier/printer for kit and jackets - ensure you stick to club colours

MONTHLY

  • Attend club meetings to discuss developments, hand in money, sort out various issues that have come to light and ensure the club is running smoothly
  • File a team report at club meeting
  • Attend league meetings (where necessary)

WEEKLY

  • Phone opposition and arrange/confirm match details
  • Sort out a referee if playing at home (the hardest task for most managers)

TRAINING

  • Make sure you have somewhere suitable/safe to train especially in winter
  • Have a training plan, try and stick to it and make sure every child gets something out of every session you take
  • Bring all coaching equipment to training sessions
  • Make sure everyone is safe
  • Collect ALL of equipment back at the end of training
  • Make it fun for the players (They will learn more if it is interesting)

MATCHDAY (based on home games)

  • Be at the ground first (First to arrive, last to leave)
  • Pitch inspection if necessary (a game is called off - usually 15+ phone calls to be made to players, opposition, referee, club, league)
  • Set up the pitch - goals, nets, corner flags etc.
  • If the pitch markings have faded re-do them (the council only do it once a year!!!!)
  • Clear the pitch of any litter, dog mess, hazards such as glass, metal etc.
  • Complete match day paperwork with away team and referee and clear up any issues/rules before start of match
  • Make sure team are correctly warmed up and ready for the game physically and mentally - did you bring training equipment?
  • Issue team instructions and starting line-up to players
  • Throughout game monitor the team and their progress, the oppositions team to spot weaknesses etc, the spectators (home and away!! the rules state the home manager must keep ALL spectators in order)
  • Did you remember the half time drinks/oranges and your motivational speech (it needs to be a good one this week as you’re 7-0 down)
  • Full time - shake everyone’s hand, speak to your team (remain positive), complete match day paperwork
  • Take down the goals, nets, corner flags etc and store them correctly in the container
  • Has every child been collected (no because you’re dropping half the team off at their houses - TAXI)

THE TEAM

  • Recruit and retain a squad of players for the entirety of the playing season
  • Instill discipline and the correct behaviour in them so they can work effectively as an individual and as a team on match day (use the clubs code of conduct)
  • Do they have the required equipment - shin pads etc.
  • Organise team building events
  • Ensure every player is happy, learning and part of the team

GENERAL

  • Are your coaching awards up to date and valid
  • Is your CRB up to date
  • Is your first aid certificate up to date
