Match Report

BOGUS FOOTBALL SCOUT

We have been informed by West Riding County FA about some suspicious circumstances involving an individual passing himself off as a Manchester United Scout. Greater Manchester Police were recently contacted by the Manchester United Children's Services Officer to make them aware of some suspicious circumstances involving an individual passing himself off as a Manchester United Scout. It appears that on the morning of Saturday 17th January 2009 at the Stalybridge Soccer School a Manchester United Scout was handed a leaflet by a parent warning of a Bogus Manchester United Scout who has been approaching Children at training sessions. For your information, the content of the notice is as follows:

"ATTENTION IMPORTANT CHILD WELFARE ISSUE"
We have become aware of an incident that has taken place at a children's Football session in Poynton where a male in his 60's with a distinctive tattoo on his face approached children at the end of the training session offering to transport them to/from the ground. The incident occurred at another club and as far as we are aware has been reported to the Police. All managers must therefore be alert at training sessions and ensure that no child leaves a session on their own and therefore, must be collected by a parent. Should anybody see anything of concern please in the first instance report this to the Police and in the second inform the club. This has been reported to Cheshire Police. I have also been informed that this individual is a white male in his 60's with a teardrop tattoo on his cheek and on being challenged by a parent he provided a telephone number that was proven to be false. The children’s officer at MUFC has contacted us this morning (02/02/09) after another MUFC Scout reported having encountered the male described below near to a venue in the Poulton Le Fylde area of Lancashire. From the conversation he had with the man, the concern was this man had observed the MUFC Scout at the Football venue where a number of local children’s games were taking place. The male is described as having Long Grey hair and a Tear Drop tattoo on his cheek, he was driving a Grey Honda Civic. This is a similar description that was given regarding a similar incident in Cheshire some 3 weeks ago.

STRANGER DANGER

There was what the police regard as a "serious incident" that took place over the weekend near the Community Centre involving some primary aged local children. Greetland Primary School have issued all parents with a note regarding the matter. The note from school read: "Following a serious incident over the weekend in Greetland, where some children were approached by strangers, we have reiterated the importance of not talking to strangers and would ask all parents to be extra vigilant whilst police investigate the matter further"

SCAM WARNING! - Don't fall for it.

The West Riding County FA have informed clubs to warn parents about a scam they have recently been made aware of.

Persons purporting to be licensed agents are sending out spam emails promising trials with various clubs, using details from the list of licensed agents on the FIFA website, www.fifa.com. The clubs and the Agents whose names have been used have no knowledge of the potential 'trials'. The scam appears to work around promising trials to young players with various clubs and then asking for payment in advance to cover 'insurance and travel'. Once the money is sent, no more is heard.

Under 11 Star's get sponsor cash boost

The Under 11 Stars received a cash boost from general sponsors The Rose and Crown, Greetland after another successful night of live entertainment. The crowd were treated to a night of music from local talent, including Oscar Oswin (My Brother Jake), Chris McParland (The Reflections) and Andy Juson, Jet Sommers and Chris 'Robbo' Robinson (Arthur Crown & The Rosettes) covering music from The Beatles through to modern hits from The Fratellis, The View and Brighouse guitar and vocalist Roger Davies. In between, the Rose held a raffle with bottles of Champagne and Christmas related food stuff on offer which overall raised a further £50 to add to the £350 raised at Augusts official event. Manager Andy Heaton was happy with the results, "Any money is always going to be welcome and I know the music and raffle was only given the go ahead during the last week, so £50 is a good amount for us. Again we should say thanks to Andy and Jet who donated all the prizes and spent time in the run up contacting artists and drawing up set lists. We should also say a big thanks to all those who bought tickets". Landlord Andy Judson agreed the night had been a success, "It's been another good night, Jet and I are happy to be supporting a worthwhile cause". The night came after the Rose was given Christmas gifts of a framed polo shirt and squad photo to add to the framed playing strip already on display.

Greetland Goldstars JFC - Guide to U6/7 Football

So, your son/daughter has just started playing football. Are you agonising over how to discover the special training techniques that will enable them to score more goals and win more games? Or maybe you're staying up late at night to draw diagram after diagram that reveals in precise detail where every player should be in relation to the ball – that will solve the bunching up problem and it will look like proper football. Do you take it more seriously than the players? READ ON

Here are a few suggestions to some of the common ‘problems’ of U6/7 football. Whilst they may seem a little idealistic, the common themes should be for the players to have fun, not be afraid of making mistakes and to be challenged as often as possible.

Why do they chase the ball?
All of the players chase the ball – it usually means that every child is having FUN!! You see, that is what every player at this age likes about the game. They can run anywhere they like with no adults telling them to walk and they love the challenge of kicking the ball all by themselves! We tend to forget that there is very little organization in the mind of a 5-6 year old and that sharing is not on the top of the list of their favourite things to do. Do they share with their brothers & sisters? They will spread out as they learn to play with their teammates so just sit back and enjoy the mayhem for now.

Scoring Goals - is an accident most of the time at this age. Let’s be honest, that clump of grass has more to do with the direction of the ball than the player who kicks it (at this age shooting & passing are merely “kicking”).

He/She is a Ball Hog.
Which brings us to the question – Are ball hogs good or bad? This age is the beginning of individuality or flair for those who really want to exaggerate. Encourage them to dribble the ball and try to beat other players. In fact, all training sessions at this age should be based around each player working with a ball. Acceptance of failure and the encouragement to try again will help the learning process.

Practice Sessions...the longer the better?
What a great way to turn play into work! More is not better at this or any age. Thirty to forty minutes will be long enough to wind them up - then give them back to their parents to calm them down. The excitement of the football experience will then remain fresh.

WINNING … it’s why we are here - is it?
Wow, I hope we all have had childhood experiences that were just fun and not necessarily based on winning. Everything in life is based on winning do we really want to emphasize the down side of competition (losing) to 5/6 year olds? They are not concerned what the end of the game brings, so why should we? Remember that youth sports were started so that kids could have fun. The most important things to teach at this age are motor skill development – the ability to control their body – and an appreciation for the fun aspects of the game. The players are presented with an incredible challenge to make their bodies do what they want them to. As a result, the objective becomes one of making their body and the ball work together as one. When they do it well they will look across for acknowledgement with a “did you see that?” look on their face. Hopefully it will be followed by an encouraging word from the adults watching.

So, to re-cap - sit back, relax and have as much fun as they do!!!!!
